An art studio, open for discovery and learning.
Welcome in
Demeter is a working artist studio in Copenhagen — an invitation into the minds and making of Michael and Chuva, and a living reminder that creativity is not something you're lucky to have. It's something you already are.

Mostly Water Book Launch
Hosted by Aisha Fukushima & demeter
September 17, 2026
Book tickets here.
An intimate evening of poetry and storytelling with Aisha Fukushima and a living-archive exhibition exploring the world behind Mostly Water.
Join poet, performer, and social justice storyteller Aisha Fukushima at demeter for an intimate evening celebrating the Copenhagen launch of her debut poetry collection, Mostly Water.
Moving through her grandmother’s kitchen, hair salons, and postwar Afro-Japanese histories, Aisha explores mixed Black and Japanese identity, memory, belonging, and solidarity. In these poems, the racialized mathematics of halves and quarters gives way to abundance—and to language spacious enough to hold who we truly are.
The evening will bring poetry and storytelling into conversation with a living-archive exhibition illuminating the people, places, and experiences that helped bring the book into being. Guests will have time to explore the exhibition, connect with one another, and purchase copies of Mostly Water and have them signed.
Listening Club (ONLINE session)
Hosted by Gus Guerrero & Chuva Featherstone
September 22, 2026
Book tickets here.
What can we learn about our own messy creative process by just listening closely to how others get through theirs?
Since 2018, Gus Guerrero from Curious Neighbours, has sat down with more than 200 people across the Nordics to talk about creativity, identity, and the rhythms of everyday life. Artists, writers, musicians, designers, filmmakers, and many others who make things in their own way and have chosen to build their lives around that. Most of those conversations have never been shared publicly.
The Curious Neighbours Listening Club opens up this archive as a space for thinking together about our own creative lives. The plan is simple: gather a small group in the same room, play a few audio clips from these interviews, and give you a bit of context on who's speaking, where the conversation took place, and why that particular moment stayed with me.
We listen together, then we talk. Someone may say something in passing that changes how you hear a particular clip, or perhaps someone else recognizes their own experience in it, or finds it completely foreign, and just by talking through that, we all end up somewhere unexpected.
Hip Hop Sound Bath
Hosted JaKenna Gilbert & Ofosu Jones-Quartey
October 2, 2026
Book tickets here.
Join Ofosu Jones-Quartey, known artistically as Born I, for a soulful evening of meditation, sound and live music. Ofosu teaches and guides from decades of mindfulness, meditation and sound offerings, with self-compassion running through everything he offers.
The afternoon begins in stillness, settling into a single premise worth resting on: you are enough. From there, the room shifts into sound. The hip hop sound bath begins with singing bowls, voice and vibration, creating space for contemplation, reflection and renewal. Rooted in the warmth and rhythm of hip hop, the sound bath invites you to listen differently, and to let sound move through you, to rest in what arises, and to experience stillness as something alive.
The evening includes a discussion and Q&A with Ofosu, to converse and discover how meditation and mindfulness practices in any form can serve you on the journey to stillness and self-compassion.
Leave with a mind quieter than the one you arrived with, and the reminder that self-compassion is a practice you can return to, again and again.
The evening will be facilitated by JaKenna Gilbert, a coach and yoga teacher.

Some of what happens at Demeter doesn't need a booking.
On certain mornings and afternoons each week, the door is simply open. Come in for a coffee. Ask about what's on the wall, or the upcoming exhibitions. If something you see makes you want to begin a conversation about a commission, that conversation is welcome here. If you just want to be in a room where something real is being made, that is welcome too.
No agenda necessary. Just curiosity.

Kid’s Courses
Children come to us already creative. We meet that aliveness — and then offer it something to work with, because creativity without any craft is just energy in a room. And the children who leave here leave knowing how to do something with theirs.
Our classes are built around the same five practices that form the foundation of any working artist's studio: sketching, drawing, painting, collage, and three-dimensional making. Your children are offered the same investigations, the same questions, the same materials, alongside working artists.
Each group is shaped around where its students are developmentally. A five-year-old and an eleven-year-old are in genuinely different relationships with the world, and with making things.
Check the shop for more info and scheduling. Spaces are limited. Register in advance.
Adult Courses
The courses at Demeter provide a foundation in strong art-making habits, built on diverse artistic backgrounds and a belief that everyone develops their own process and technique over time—we want to help you unlock yours. Our teaching style is flexible yet also structured; in any given class, we focus on understanding the qualities of materials, how composition and structure shape the work, and how to use different techniques effectively. We welcome adults at every stage: complete beginners, those returning after years away, and those who already have a practice but want something different from it.
The most interesting things happen when you bring together people with varied experiences in a room focused on art and design. The experience informs the work, builds friendships, deepens understanding of process and quality, and may even awaken a lifelong pursuit of drawing or painting. We welcome the chance to bring you into our studio and our projects, and to share in your next artistic step.
Chuva Featherstone
Chuva is a transformational coach, artist, designer, and educator, and at Demeter, all of it is present at once. Her coaching is the outward expression of the same inner investigation she brings to the canvas, a living extension of her creative practice. She works with both children and adults, and her deepest conviction is this: the creative impulse is already there. It has always been there. The work is to clear what has been covering it.
Michael Sherman
Michael is an artist/illustrator and teacher, drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. For years, that meant the individual practice, the solo studio, the exhibitions. What he found himself wanting, over time, was community — the particular aliveness of a room where humans are all following their own curiosity at once. At Demeter, he is building the space he always wanted to work in.
Let’s keep the door open
Demeter is currently taking shape. New offerings will continue to emerge as the studio grows. The best way to stay close to what's happening is to join our newsletter and follow us on Instagram — that's where the story unfolds in real time.
